Headwaters of the Takhini

A mountain moonscape of glaciers and rock

Far above the tree line, an ancient land in transformation.

A landscape in constant transformation, the headwaters of the Takhini offer one of our most extraordinary expeditions. Starting high above the treeline, you’ll land on a secluded lake nestled hundreds of meters higher than any other of our trips, in a terrain dramatically shaped by ancient, receding glaciers. Often described as a “lunar moonscape,” this journey begins with exploration through rugged glaciers and vast, rock-strewn snowfields deep in the Coast Mountains.

As the days unfold, you’ll descend gradually, moving from the stark beauty of the high alpine into the lush, verdant subalpine boreal forest. This area lies along major wildlife corridors, offering a high likelihood of spotting diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for Dall sheep, wolves, moose, and valleys rich in animal tracks and signs.

With a landscape that accommodates all skill levels, this trip is adaptable for both beginner hikers and seasoned backpackers. The terrain provides options to tailor the difficulty to match the group’s abilities, ensuring everyone can enjoy the experience to the fullest.

This trip is located within the Traditional Lands of the Carcross/Tagish First Nations
